Longwood University is an institution of higher learning dedicated to the development of citizen leaders who are prepared to make positive contributions to the common good of society.  In support of this mission, the Greenwood Library invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Library Information Associate/Library Specialist I in the Greenwood Library.  This position will work from The Desk, the Library’s single service point for information and research services, to provide support to students, faculty, and staff.  This position is required to work days, nights, and weekends, including up until 2:00 am.   

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Provides direct service to Library patrons at single service point known as “the Desk” throughout the year including weekends and evenings.
  • Process print and non-print library materials to prepare for inclusion in the library’s collection
  • Assists with daily operations of the interlibrary loan and document delivery services
  • Provide superior customer service to students, faculty and staff
  • Perform circulation, financial, and clerical functions
  • Resolve customer service issues using established policies
  • Maintain an area of the Library’s collection including inventory, organizing and shelving library materials
  • Input and update data on computer systems
  • Place and/or clear holds in the Library’s automated system
  • Responsible for providing accurate reports
  • Assist with the training of student assistants

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred and/or several years of equivalent library work experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified
  • Supervisory work experience in a public library setting preferred
  • Library work experience in a customer service environment preferred
  • Working knowledge of library principles, practices, and terminology
  • Ability to follow procedures and related standards
  • Working knowledge of procedures and standards for the processing and/or maintenance of library materials
  • Working knowledge of business and mathematical processes to reconcile financial and statistical data
  • Proficiency in computer skills in a Windows based environment required (word processing, spreadsheets, Internet, and email applications); in a Mac environment preferred
  • Extensive customer service work experience
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to include the ability to train others on tasks and to explain technical issues to non-technical personnel
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs., unassisted
  • Ability to stand and/or sit for long periods of time
