DESCRIPTION: This award-winning regional library system is seeking an imaginative and enthusiastic professional librarian with strong leadership and programming skills to serve the Youth Services Department at our Porter Branch. The Porter Branch is located in Northern Stafford County, Virginia and is within commuting distance to nearby Marine Corps Base Quantico.  Located in historic Fredericksburg, VA, midway between Washington, DC, and Richmond, VA, CRRL serves over 300,000 residents in four jurisdictions through eight, soon to be ten, branches, a satellite branch and a Library Administration Center. The library enjoys strong community support, with annual circulation over ten million, an annual budget over eleven million dollars, and a dedicated and forward-looking staff of over 300 people. Fredericksburg and the surrounding area are home to an active arts community, the University of Mary Washington, plentiful outdoor recreation opportunities, and a rich history.

HOURS: 40 hours per week (full-time with benefits); approximately 15-20 desk hours a week, including one night per week plus one Saturday per month. Schedule flexibility including occasional evenings and weekends will be required to accommodate community events or meetings and special classes.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: This is a leadership position within the branch, implements collection management, and assists with library promotion through text and displays. This position delivers readers’ advisory, research instruction and educational classes and events to children, teens and their caregivers. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITY:

  • Knowledge of American Library Association’s Every Child Ready to Read, and programming experience with children and teens in a public library setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of children’s and teen literature desired.
  • Experience in managing multiple priorities, meeting ongoing deadlines and leadership preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of computer hardware and peripherals; digital literacy skills including proficiency in internet research and familiarity with a variety of programs and apps.

QUALIFICATIONS: A Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited college or university is required, emphasis on children and teen services preferred. Strong customer service orientation. Good communication skills, flexible work habits, and ability to relate to young people, their caregivers, and fellow staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires work that involves walking or standing, bending and stooping; and involves exerting up to 30 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis to lift and/or move library materials. Ability to sit or stand at a desk and/or computer for extended hours, read computer screens and use computer keyboards. Requires a valid VA driver’s license.

SALARY: Hiring starts at $46,528 with excellent benefits, including affordable health insurance premiums and VRS retirement for a total compensation package worth approximately $68,000 per year.
