The Role of the VLA Communications and Technology Committee
The VLA Communications and Technology Committee includes a chairperson and at least five members, all appointed by the President for two year terms. Appointments are staggered to assure continuity. Association editors and Webmaster serve as ex-officio committee members.
Committee Charge
Monitor the content, timeliness, relevance, and overall quality of all VLA publications, including the VLA webpage. Maintain contact with association, unit editors, and the VLA Executive Committee, and address issues and problems as they arise.
Objectives
a. Encourage VLA unit and association editors to share ideas with the Committee and with each other. Serve as an advisory body to all VLA units which issue publications.
b. Mentor VLA members interested in publication. Encourage VLA members to publish articles or VLA Occasional Papers relevant to issues in librarianship
c. Update the VLA Publications Manual as needed; distribute electronically formatted copy to the webmaster and printed copies to all editors, and to Council members who request them.
d. Evaluate publication proposals from VLA units. Make recommendations on need for and format of publication.
e. Recommend style and procedural guidelines for VLA publications.
f. Maintain a roster of all serial publications of the Association which includes:
A. Publication title
B. Sponsoring unit
C. Editors’ names, addresses, and telephone numbers
D. Names of members of editorial board (if any)
E. Publication frequency
F. Publication mission statement or purpose
g. Review applications/nominations for editorial positions for Virginia Libraries, the VLA Newsletter, and VLA webmaster, and offer recommendations to the President.
h. Assure that archival copies of all VLA publications are maintained.
i. Publicize the VLA Jobline. Assist Webmaster and Executive Director with any problems or complications arising from Jobline.
VLA Publications:
The Virginia Library Association is a publisher of journals and monographs.
VLA produces Virginia Libraries [ISSN 1086-9751], a quarterly journal whose purpose is to develop and improve library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to advance literacy and learning and to ensure access to information in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The journal, distributed in print to the membership and archived online thanks to Virginia Tech’s Digital Library and Archives, is used as a vehicle for members to exchange information, ideas, and solutions to mutual problems in professional articles on current topics in the library and information field. In addition, the Association has several special publications published by its units, including the popular Intellectual Freedom Manual, VPLDA’s Planning for Excellence, and other publications. Some VLA units, divisions, round tables, and interest groups also publish newsletters of interest to their members.
