Rebecca K. Miller and Megan Hodge Recieve Presidential Citation

At the 2012 Annual Conference, President Connie Gilman presented Rebecca K. Miller of Virginia Tech and Megan Hodge of Chesterfield County Public Library with the VLA Presidential Citation. The text of the Citation read:

“In May of 2011, the Virginia Library Association Executive Committee received a petition, signed by 36 library staff from Virginia. The petition sought to re-establish a forum to engage and recruit new members to VLA. The effort was spearheaded, enthusiastically, by  two librarians, one of whom was a recipient of the VLA Scholarship Award in 2009, and the other who had recently moved to Virginia. A specific objective of the petition was to ‘provide a wide variety of programs to assist, encourage, and educate those new to the Virginia Library Association and the profession.’ Through dynamic recruitment and creative social hours and gatherings in VLA regions, the New Members Round Table Forum has done just that. In 2012, VLA gained 190 new members. As we begin to collect memberships for 2013, we already have 82 new members, due largely to the efforts of the NMRT. To quote the petition once more, a goal of the New Members Round Table Forum was ‘to bring new vitality, energy and ideas’ to the Virginia Library Association, and they have exceeded that expectation. Please join me in presenting this Presidential Citation to Rebecca K. Miller and Megan Hodge.

Barbie Selby Receives VLA Presidential Citation

At the September 14, 2012 VLA Council Meeting, President Connie Gilman presented Barbie Selby with the VLA Presidential Citation. The Citation read: ”

In honor of her years of service to the field of librarianship in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Barbie Selby has been recognized both locally and nationally. According to the ALA website, Barbie was selected for the Bernadine Abbott Hoduski Founders Award in 1999, due to “her efforts to promote the visibility of Federal, state and international government information and to improve communication in Virginia among those who work with government information.” Her commitment to communication resulted in the consistent publication of The Shipping List newsletter, as well as relevant, timely and significant articles in Virginia Libraries. For her steadfast dedication  to the sharing of information and her years of support, the Virginia Library Association presents this Presidential Citation to Barbie Selby.”

Revolutionizing the Development of Library and Information Professionals: Planning for the Future

Audiobook Survey: Please respond by 9/24/12

We need your help!

At the upcoming Virginia Library Association conference in Williamsburg, I will co-present the session “Redefining Audio: Making It a Priority” with Michele Cobb, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at AudioGo and the current president of the Audio Publishers Association Board of Directors.

We are gathering statistics on how audio books are being purchased and used in Virginia. To do this, we are asking Virginia library selectors, acquisitions librarians, and collection development specialists who purchase audio books to fill out a brief survey and answer questions about the different formats your library purchases, how much they circulate, and how much of your budget is allocated toward them. We recommend that you retrieve your most recent annual statistics report before starting the survey.

If other library staff members want to give their feedback on how audio books are being used in the library, we welcome those responses as well. There are questions toward the end that allow you to share your perspectives.

To access the survey, please click on this link:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/VLAaudiobooks

It should take approximately 10 minutes to complete the survey. Please respond by Monday, September 24th.

We appreciate your time and your support.
