On Friday the VLA server software was upgraded and various Listserv problems resolved. I apologize for the extended downtime of the server. We needed to make some network changes that took some time to resolve. Due to data corruption Region 1 list subscribers will need to resubscribe to VLA-Region1. Please let me know if you experience any problems with the VLA site.

Late Breaking Conference News...

Jefferson Cup Award Luncheon: Speaker: Gloria Whelan, author of Friend on Freedom River is the recipient of an Honor Award for the 2005 Jefferson Cup Award. Friend on Freedom River (Sleeping Bear Press) tells the story of a courageous young man who risks his life to ferry a family fleeing from slavery across the Detroit River as winter sets in and forces all travel on the river to halt. The picture book commemorates the journeys of Michigan's Underground Railroad. Mrs. Whelan lives with her husband, Jim, in Michigan on the shores of Oxbow Lake. From her office she can see the wildlife that she includes in her books. It is the heron that finds a place of importance in quilt embroidery in Homeless Bird (HarperCollins); a story of courage and hope for young adults that was awarded the 2000 National Book Award. Gloria has always been a writer. She recounts the early stories she would tell to her babysitter who would type them for her. She has exercised her craft to successfully over 25 books for children and youth. She writes about the places she likes. Many are set in Michigan. She is a writer for writers. She states that she likes revising her stories because it gives her a chance to "get to make the story more and more like the story as [she] imagined it." Mrs. Whelan brings her stories to VLA as she will be speaking at the Jefferson Cup Award Luncheon, Friday at 12 noon.
