Longwood University is an institution of higher learning dedicated to the development citizen leaders who are prepared to make positive contributions to the common good of society.  In support of this mission, we invite qualified applicants to apply for the position of Library Information Associate/Library Specialist I in the Greenwood Library.  This person will work from The Desk, the Library’s single service point for information and research services, to provide support to students, faculty, and staff.  This position is required to work days, nights, and weekends.  

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Provide superior customer service to students, faculty, and staff
  • Assist with the staffing of the Desk, including nights and weekends
  • Responsible for assisting with the training of student assistants to help patrons
  • Perform circulation, financial, and clerical functions
  • Resolve customer service issues using established policies
  • Maintain an area of the Library’s collection and places and/or clears holds
  • Responsible for providing accurate reports on monthly activities
  • Assist with interlibrary loans and the technical processing of materials

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Library experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities above or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience
  • Working knowledge of procedures and standards for the processing and/or maintenance of library materials
  • Working knowledge of library principles, practices, and terminology
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills, including Windows and Mac based environments, word processing, spreadsheets, Internet, and email applications
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer service
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to complete major projects and daily tasks under strict time constraints, and with shifting priorities
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to accomplish tasks that are physically demanding, such as pushing, pulling, walking and standing for extended time periods and safely lifting up to 50 lbs. unassisted
  • Required to work nights and weekends including closing shifts until 2 a.m.
