Library Specialist III, Pay Band 5
Salary Range up to $65,000 (commensurate with experience)

The Library of Virginia is seeking an experienced Children’s & Youth Services Consultant for the Library Development and Networking Division. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive consulting services and programs in the areas of service to children, youth, families, literacy initiatives, and similar specialized areas offering direction, assistance, counsel, oversight, and training to the public libraries. The Library fosters an open, team-oriented environment and is looking for a candidate who will support our core values and competencies: collaboration, teamwork, building trust, and supporting the Library’s Vision and Mission.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Virginia’s driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to hire;
  • Progressively responsible professional library experience;
  • Knowledge of library management and information services, the principles, practices, and policies of youth services in libraries;
  • Knowledge of trends and techniques in planning, managing, and evaluating youth services;
  • Knowledge of the principles of Outcome Based Evaluation measurements;
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and public policies relating to youth;
  • Knowledge of principles of literacy development in families and at various stages of childhood;
  • Ability to conduct research, plan, and conduct programs and training;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to work in teams internally and externally;
  • Ability to use computers and standard applications in the modern office environment;
  • Ability to work independently; and,
  • Ability to travel during the day and occasionally overnight.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduation from an ALA accredited university with a master’s degree in library science; and,
  • Virginia Professional Librarian Certificate.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may substitute for educational requirements.
