I.    POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Youth Services Manager, the Youth Services Assistant II provides information services and reading related programs to children and young adults (birth through 18 years old). The position works independent to create, schedule, and conducts library and reading programs for the library’s service area of the City of Hopewell, Prince George County and Dinwiddie County. While the position is based out of the Hopewell Library, the position presents programming as scheduled at the other seven locations in the library system. The work schedule is varied with weekday, evening and weekend hours as necessary for the position’s responsibilities.

II.    MAJOR POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
a.    Under the supervision and review of the Youth Services Manager, plans and conducts story times for babies, toddlers and preschoolers;
b.    Under the supervision and review of the Youth Services Manager, plans and conducts programs for school age children.
c.    As assigned, plans, coordinates and conducts programs for teens.
d.    Manages projects such as weeding and displays in the Children’s Department. Monitors and maintains the library’s youth services collection.
e.    Prepares and participates in outreaches to local schools and daycare centers.
f.    May lead book discussions, conduct book-talks, create booklists and brochures or conduct other creative projects designed to encourage reading.
g.    Maintains accurate attendance, reference and patron statistics.
h.    Provides reader advisory and reader guidance and homework help for children.
i.    Assists children and parents with use of computers and technology.
j.    Assists in registering borrowers inside the library locations or at outreaches. 

III.    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
a.    Previous experience working with babies, children and teens.
b.    Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
c.    Excellent internal and external customer service skills
d.    Strong knowledge of personal computers and the Internet as well as a willingness and ability to acquire knowledge of advanced or changing computer applications.
e.    Ability to analyze and perform and/or manage a wide variety of library projects.
f.    Demonstrated initiative and accuracy.
g.    Ability to work independently, develop, plan, and implement short and long-term goals, and complete projects by deadlines.
h.    Ability to collaborate on many different levels and resolve problems.

IV.    ACCEPTABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires Bachelor’s degree or any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school diploma with a minimum of 4 years work related experience. Experience with children, computer literate, and a Virginia driver’s license required. Library experience strongly preferred.

Salary for the position is $27,947.40 with benefit package including holiday, personal and sick leave, health insurance, and retirement
