DESCRIPTION:  Under general supervision, performs professional library work which may include reference and reader’s advisory services, tasks at the circulation desk, and assisting the supervisor in the maintenance of branch collection. Work involves designing program activities, providing technology training and assisting in the overall supervision of the library. Additionally, employee will act as a team leader for technical services and positions related to acquisitions and cataloging. Work also involves participating in collection development and managing a wide variety bibliographic and database maintenance duties.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Performs reference and reader’s advisory tasks such as instructing readers in the use of print and online reference sources; answering reference questions and requests in person, online, and over the telephone; providing readers advisory through personal knowledge, print, and online resources; prepares interlibrary loan requests.
Assists in performance of tasks at the circu1ation desks, including checking library books in and out, registering patrons for a borrower's card, shelving books, maintaining records and tabulations.
Assists supervisor in the review, selection, purchase, and maintenance of branch col1ection and periodicals including specialized collections, i.e. large print books, ethnic interests, young adult, etc.
Designs, promotes, and implements program activities for library patrons and the general public; provides assistance in the creation and development of special displays advertising current and future library programs; plans and prepares monthly craft activities for children; plans and prepares programs and activities for young adults.
Renders professional library work by performing necessary resource acquisitions, including handling license agreements, vendor contracts, and annual subscription quotes.
Maintains acquisitions data, statistics, reports, and policies.
Participates in collection development, contributes to Technical Services planning, and provides leadership in electronic resources selection.
Manages and performs a wide variety of bibliographic and database maintenance duties and projects, analyzing/resolving complex cataloging problems including correcting headings and resolving holdings.
Keeps abreast of revisions of cataloging rules and trends. Demonstrates knowledge of cataloging principles and procedures, including Library of Congress Subject Headings and Classification, AACR2R, and MARC formats.
Performs other related work as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Master degree in Library Science and 1 to 3 years of cataloging experience in a library setting, and experience with OCLC is preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Certification as a Librarian by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Education Library Board or have the ability to obtain certification within six months of employment.
An acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history

SALARY: Anticipated Hiring Range: $34,631 - $45,886
