ACM or Academic Common Market, is an arrangement among Southern states allowing students to pay in-state tuition rates at out-of-state schools while studying in select programs not available at Virginia public institutions. (see SCHEV's ACM Site for up to date information and requirements)

The agreement by SCHEV (The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) with 13 other southern states who are also members of the Southern Regional Education Boards ''allows participating students to pay in-state tuition while studying outside their home states.'' Eligible programs are those not available in the home state. Institutions in the Academic Common Market (ACM) that currently offer degrees in library and information science are:

II. Regional Contract Program

This contract program between SCHEV and the Southern Regional Education Board provides grants to 15 students at two of the three ALA accredited MLS programs in North Carolina - the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina Central University. Currently there are 12 slots at UNC Chapel Hill and 2 at North Carolina Central University. The number of grants available each year varies since the Chapel Hill program is a two-year program and support is available for both years. For the 1996-98 biennium, each recipient receives $4500 per year.

To be eligible, you must be accepted at one of the participating graduate programs and be certified as a legal Virginia resident. There currently are more applicants for this program than there are grants available. Determination of grant recipients is made by the library science program. For more information, contact the library schools or the Regional Contract Coordinator (Stephen C. Scott Senior Associate for Academic Affairs at the SCHEV address given above. )

III. Virginia Library Association Scholarships

VLA awards two $2000 scholarships annually.  They may be awarded to students entering a master's program in library school for the first time, or to students currently enrolled in a program.

To be eligible, you must be a legal resident of Virginia, must hold an accredited undergraduate degree and must have been accepted by an ALA accredited library school.

Major factors considered in making the awards are evidence of commitment to a career in librarianship in Virginia, financial need, academic excellence, leadership qualities or demonstration of potential outstanding achievement in the profession, and membership in VLA.

The scholarship recipients are usually announced in late summer.  For more information contact:
