Abandon all Fear: assessing, evaluating and letting go of legacy services (forthcoming 2013)

* *

We invite proposals for case studies to be published in a forthcoming ALA Editions book Abandon all Fear: assessing, evaluating and letting go of legacy services, an edited collection of case studies examining how librarians in all types of organizations are responding and adapting to cataclysmic budgetary and programming changes.

* *

The book will be edited by Mary Evangeliste, owner of the consulting collaborative Fearless Future <marye@fearless-future.com>and Katherine Furlong, Director for Access and Technical Services for the libraries of Lafayette College <furlongk@lafayette.edu>

* *

Have you had to change, adapt, even abandon services, spaces or programs in light of the recent economic conditions? We’re looking for case studies focusing on how libraries of all types are changing and adapting service models to let go of obsolete or less useful programs. Given the current economic climate, libraries can no longer afford to maintain the status quo. But instead of reacting in a panicked fashion to budgetary and staffing challenges, librarians can choose a measured, proactive response. If you think you’ve found a new means of being relevant to your users, please share your story.

While our initial proposal has three sections, we’re open to other ideas:

Section One: Public Services Case Studies

Section Two: Technical Services & Collections Case Studies

Section Three: Facilities and Systems Case Studies

* *

We welcome proposals from librarians, library administrators, trustees, faculty or other partners both individually and as teams.

The proposal should consist of an abstract of 500 words together with all author contact information. Please include in proposal the issue faced, the strategies and assessments used to examine the issue and the result. Case studies should run at least ten double-spaced pages.

Email to: Mary Evangeliste and Katherine Furlong

He has been a Reference and Instruction Librarian at the University of Maryland University College since January 31st of this year, where he is liaison to the Undergraduate School’s Center for Student Success and the Graduate School’s Education Department. Previously, he taught science in New York City public schools and then English and creative writing at Northern Virginia Community College. He hopes that the Emerging Leader program will introduce him to other librarians of all ages who are new to the field, and that the program will serve as a conduit to continued involvement in ALA.

Rebecca Kate Miller is the Information Literacy Coordinator & College Librarian for Science, Life Sciences, and Engineering at Virginia Tech. She earned my MLS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2007, and worked at Louisiana State University until she joined the faculty at Virginia Tech in May 2010. As a new information professional, she is very interested in connecting and supporting other new librarians, and work with the Virginia Library Association to do this. Currently, Rebecca serves as the VLA Membership Chair and has collaborated with Megan Hodge to reactivate the VLA New Members Round Table Forum. Nationally, she serves as the Secretary of the ALA New Members Round Table and on several ACRL committees. Rebecca is looking forward to meeting new colleagues and gaining new insights through the Emerging Leaders program.

The award invites library users nationwide to recognize the accomplishments of librarians in public, school, college, community college and university libraries for their efforts to improve the lives of people in their community. Nominations are being accepted online at atyourlibrary.org/ilovemylibrarian through Sept. 12.

Up to 10 librarians will be selected. Each will receive a $5,000 cash award, a plaque and will be honored at an awards ceremony and reception in New York, hosted by The New York Times, in December.

Over the past three years, 30 librarians from across the country have won the I Love My Librarian Award. Last year, more than 2,000 library users nationwide nominated a librarian. Previous winners have been lauded for starting community gardens, helping students with severe disabilities read classic works of literature, for helping non-traditional students learn new technology to get better jobs and more. For more information on previous winners, visit atyourlibrary.org/ilovemylibrarian.

Each nominee must be a librarian with a master’s degree from a program accredited by the ALA in library and information studies or a master’s degree with a specialty in school library media from an educational unit accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Nominees must be currently working in the United States in a public library, a library at an accredited two- or four-year college or university or at an accredited K-12 school.

The Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award is administered by the Campaign for America’s Libraries, ALA’s public awareness campaign that promotes the value of libraries and librarians. The Campaign is made possible by ALA’s Library Champions, corporations and foundations.

With summer reading programs in full swing and the demand for beach/vacation reading, many communities are making the most of their libraries during this break from school. If you haven’t already, consider joining the other Virginia libraries who have used the SnapshotVA advocacy materials in their summer programs. Some libraries are displaying posters, others are including bookmarks in their summer reading club bags or at checkout. The kick-off campaign materials, as well as the statistics, comments, and photos are all available on the SnapshotVA website: http://snapshotvirginia.org/

One easy step that all Virginia libraries can take is to send a press release to local newspapers and other media. It can be as simple as sending an email and the resulting publicity can help get the word out about your busy library and essential libraries across Virginia. I would like share the success story of Cheryl Griffith, Community Relations Manager for the Massanutten Regional Library. She sent a fabulous press release to her local newspaper in which she citied state-wide statistics, her library’s participation, and tied it all together with quotes from her patrons. This turned into a compelling and informative article in the Daily News Record. I am always happy to answer questions about SnapshotVA that reporters might need to fill out a story, so feel free to share my contact information.

Click on these links for Cheryl’s press release and the newspaper article it inspired.

If you have any questions about making the most of SnapshotVA or creating press releases, please let me know.

Thank you,
