VLA Council Meeting at
Annual Conference
October 28, 1999
The Homestead
1)
President
Heinemann convened the meeting at 11:25 a.m. and welcomed both new and old
Council members to Council and to the annual conference.
2)
Minutes
from the September 9, 1999 Council meeting were approved as distributed.
3) Treasurer's Report: Treasurer Sumey reviewed VLA's income and expense sheets to date. He reported approximately $8,000 more in operating income than budgeted, due in part to the membership dues increase. Donations toward VLA's legislative liaison stand at $23,600 with some pledges still outstanding. Scholarship funds are on track. The Paraprofessional Conference contributed approximately $10,000, general programs approximately $2,000 and the Annual Conference is projected to add approximately $10,000 toward the total Conference/Program income. Expenses are on target. This year VLA should end the year in strong financial shape with a projected $95,000 in reserve as of December 31, 1999. Within the next year the association should achieve the goal of one year's operating expenses in reserve. Treasurer Sumey thanked members of Council, the Executive Committee and Linda Hahne for helping VLA achieve this excellent financial report. Sandy Heinemann also commended Linda Hahne's hard work in helping the association to achieve this improved financial position.
4) Executive Director's Report: Linda Hahne reported that 73 of the 83 available vendor booths have been sold, and suggested that Council members attend the exhibits and thank vendors for participating. Conference registration is at 409 with 50-100 onsite registrations expected. The breakdown by type of library is 187 public, 132 academic, 33 trustees and friends, 13 school, 8 special, 12 other and 24 unknown. Of the 175 tickets guaranteed for the luncheon 146 have been sold. Thirty-three tickets have been sold for the concert. Three hundred forty eight registrants paid for the full conference. Linda announced a few changes in the program, and noted that the conference chair will be announcing these as well.
5) Other: Sandy wished everyone a pleasant conference at the Homestead. She announced that annual reports are due from all units for activity over the past year. Secretary Newins noted that she was still accepting reports at the conference and that reports could be sent after the conference via e-mail. Second Vice President Stella Pool distributed the final manual revision index pages.
Incoming President Barkley welcomed members of the
2000 VLA Council and announced, on behalf of the Continuing Education
Committee, that new Council members should please RSVP for the VLA Program
Planners Workshop to be held at the Library of Virginia on November 12,
1999. This meeting will include an
