1. The meeting was called to order at 11:40 P.M. by President Chabot.

2. Cy Dillon moved to approve the September 5, 1997 Council minutes. Passed.

  • Nominating Committee report: Caroline Parr announced the election results for 1998.

      4. Executive Director’s report: Linda Hahne distributed the schedule of dates for the Leadership Workshop and 1998 Council meetings and publication deadlines. All the Council meetings will be held at the Northside Branch of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library. She also distributed the roster of the 1998 VLA Council members and asked anyone to notify her if corrections were needed.

    Linda announced that there were 344 preregistered attendees and the number of reserved rooms for the Conference was met as long as no one cancels. Updates on the number of attendees will be announced Friday, at the Annual Business meeting.

    5. Treasurer’s report: Caroline announced that she receives the reports promptly from Linda Hahne. Revenue is up. Membership dues reflect 1997 revenues. Dues for 1998 are not reflected in the current report. All honorariums for the Conference have been paid and Linda ordered 100 additional Virginia Libraries for vendors to demonstrate an avenue for advertising to reach large numbers of libraries. The revenue and operating budget sheets were distributed. (Filed with official minutes)

    6. Legislative Committee update: Spencer Watts reminded members of the gubernatorial candidates’ responses to funding for libraries enclosed in the latest issue of the VLA Newsletter. He is still recruiting members for the Legislative Committee. The committee will meet Friday to work on full-funding plans and support of VIVA. Spencer announced that Richard Seaman, Legislative Fiscal Analyst for the House Appropriations Committee will speak at the Legislative Update session Friday morning.

    7. Awards and Recognition Committee report: Karen Dillon recognized Lis Chabot as outgoing VLA President and Carolyn Barkley as outgoing Second vice-president. She presented both with gifts of appreciation for their service. Other awards will be announced and presented during the Conference at the General Sessions.

    8. Continuing Education Committee report: Juleigh Clark asked everyone to return the "Needs Assessment" survey enclosed with the latest VLA Newsletter. She has extra copies if needed. The committee plans to meet Friday to discuss the results of the survey. She also reminded everyone of the December 4th Leadership Workshop. Information will be on VLA’s web page.

    9. Administrative Services Committee: Carolyn Barkley announced that a membership survey is conducted every other year. The forms will be distributed at the General Session and she asked that everyone fill them out and return them. A form will also be on VLA’s web page.

    10. Stella Pool announced that she is selling tickets for the Scholarship Committee’s raffle.
