Norfolk Public Library Director Norman Maas to retire on July 1, 2013

Norfolk, VA (June 25, 2013) — On July 1, 2013, Norman Maas will retire from serving as the library director of the Norfolk Public Library (NPL). Having recovered from brain surgery, Norman felt it was time to retire from his life’s passion and work and looks forward to retirement

Norman has served as the library director of NPL for 10 years. During that time, he oversaw the installation of KidZones and over 25 computers in all library locations, the renovation and expansion of the Park Place Branch Library and the construction and opening of the Mary D. Pretlow Anchor Branch Library.

Norman began his career at the Detroit Public Library, where he coordinated the library’s community information and referral service called TIP. As TIP coordinator, he published numerous reports and articles pertaining to information and referral. He went on to become the library director for the Public Libraries of Saginaw, Michigan and then the library director of the Metropolitan Library System in Oklahoma. Norman has served on the Board of Directors for the Public Library Association, the Council of the American Libraries Association, and the Board of Directors for the Michigan Library Association. He is a past president of the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems.
