Deloris sets the standard for commitment to excellence and service in the library profession and beyond. She has worked her entire career in higher education at three Virginia institutions, where she has made tremendous contributions to staff development causes. At Swem Library and the wider College of William & Mary campus community, she has distinguished herself as a leader in promoting the stature, reputation, and voice of paraprofessionals, and garnering their participation and engagement in important initiatives.
Deloris’ accomplishments as a tireless advocate for staff are numerous. In addition to heading the Classified Staff Association at Swem for two years, she was elected president of the Hourly and Classified Association at the College (HACE). During her HACE tenure, she provided staff representation on important campus committees such as the College Restructuring Committee convened when William & Mary petitioned to become a Charter institution with UVA and Tech. She played a key role in creating a listserv on campus that greatly facilitated communication among the College’s 1300 hourly, classified and operational employees. She also joined the Virginia Government Employees Association so that she could share General Assembly updates with College staff. One of Deloris’ most significant accomplishments is creating the Staff Assembly at the College of William and Mary. A primary objective of the Staff Assembly was to open lines of communication between staff and the administration. For 18 months, she worked on a steering committee doing research and developing the bylaws and constitution for the organization. She made effective presentations to the Vice President for Administration and the College Board of Visitors who approved creation of the Assembly in April 2010. As Assembly President this past year, she serves on the College Board of Visitors as the staff representative, and continues to provide staff input on other campus committees including Strategic Planning, Faculty Priorities, Employee Appreciation Day Planning, and College Diversity. She also participates in Commencement and Charter Day activities.
Deloris has served on the Board for the VLAPF since 2007 and has served as secretary since 2008. She was instrumental in beginning the networking activities that have added to the annual conference. She also coordinated the 2010 VLAPF Regional conference that was held at the College last September.
In addition to her work on committees, she is the assistant to the Dean of University Libraries and regularly makes valuable contributions that support Swem’s mission. She is HR manager for the library, a member of the web design team, and coordinator of library hospitality activities. Deloris was asked to serve on the Selection Committee for the new dean of libraries. This was a major time commitment and staff are very happy with the outcome of her hard work. She enjoys the highest regard of her colleagues around campus for the integrity, professionalism, and grace she brings to all her endeavors.Nominated by: Debra Weiss Director of Technology Earl Gregg Swem Library
